ImageThe SDCS Educational Technology Plan applies several key strategies to integrate technology, instructional software and online learning supports into all curricular areas so that students develop the 21st century information and communications technology skills that will support their learning and success in the working world.  One of these strategies includes the development of “Model-Building" examples of technology integration at participating school sites within the district.

Teachers and staff from these model-building examples demonstrate best practices in technology integration to teachers from other district schools, to help build all teachers’ capacity to implement these changes to their teaching practice. In addition, implementation of the technology integration models at the benchmark schools will enable the district’s Educational Technology Department to identify the challenges encountered by teachers, administrators and staff. Educational Technology Department staff develop interventions to address these challenges when the models are adopted at other district schools.  The development and identification of these best practices will help support student achievement by providing tested, effective models for technology integration into learning activities.

This model-building strategy is based in part on research that concluded that teachers who were involved in planning for technology better integrated and sustained the use of technology in instruction. Teachers need opportunities to experiment and conduct action research using technology within the context of the specific content to be taught (U.S. Department of Education, 2001).
