reading standards. Others may also be addressed as you modify the

- Social Studies Content Standard 6.1: The
student describes what is known through archaeological studies of
the early physical and cultural development of humankind, from the
Paleolithic era to the agricultural revolution, with emphasis on
the defining role of physical geography.
- Performance Standard 6.1.1: The student
describes hunter-gatherer societies and their characteristics,
including the development of tools and the use of
fire.
- Performance Standard 6.1.2: The student
explains how human communities populated the major regions of the
world and adapted to a variety of environments.
- Performance Standard 6.1.3 The student
describes the climatic changes and human modifications of the
physical environment that gave rise to the domestication of plants
and animals and the increase in the sources of clothing and
shelter.
- Reading Content Standard 6.1 The student
regularly reads a wide variety of materials, including
informational text and significant literature from a variety of
cultures and genres, and studies some authors or topics in
depth.
- Performance Standard 6.1.1 The student reads
the equivalent of at least 25 books during grade 6. They include
materials from a variety of curriculum content areas, such as
social studies, mathematics, and science, as well as magazines,
newspapers, and on-line materials.
- Reading Content Standard 6.2 The student
develops the skills and strategies necessary to read and
comprehend thoroughly literary, informational, andtechnical
text.
- Performance Standard 6.2.1 The student uses
knowledge of word relationships and context clues to determine
meaning. The student effectively uses strategie to assist
understanding.
- Reading Content Standard 6.3 The student
understands, analyzes, interprets, evaluates, and extends the
meaning of a wide variety of significant literature--nonfiction,
fiction, poetry, and drama.
- Performance Standard 6.3.1 The student
responds to nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and drama using
interpretive, critical, and evaluative processes.
- Reading Content Standard 6.4 The student
understands, analyzes, synthesizes, and evaluates informational
text and public and functional documents, connecting text with
prior knowledge and experience.
- Performance Standard 6.4.1 The student reads
informational materials to develop understanding and expertise and
produces oral and written work.
- Writing Content Standard 6.5 The student
writes effectively for a range of audiences and a variety of
purposes, following the conventions of standard, written language,
and using steps of the writing process as needed.
- Performance Standard 6.5.1 The student
demonstrates an understanding of the rules of the English
language.
- Performance Stadanrd 6.5.2 The student
analyzes and subsequently revises written work to clarify the
writing or make it more effective in communicating the intended
message or thought.
- Writing Content Standard 6.6 The student
writes in a variety of forms--literary, informational and
technical text&emdash;completing authentic tasks characteristic of
the real world. In the process, the student demonstrates awareness
of audience and purpose, command of standard language, and the
writing process.
- Performance Standard 6.6.2 The student
produces a response to literature.
