Pershing Middle School Science Fair Technology Use: Jeremiah PotterIn this episode, Jeremiah Potter, a teacher at Pershing Middle School, will discuss how the students used technology in a variety of ways for their science fair projects. Topics will include how the use of technology:
1. increases student learning and their ability to present data and results
2. helps second language learners
3. helps students to communicate ideas to an audience
4. provides for differentiated learning opportunities
5. how scientific tools increase the quality and quantity of data that can be collected leaving more time for interpretation
6. how Moodle allowed students to work more like scientists through online collaboration with peers while also providing the vehicle for more frequent and higher quality feedback from teachers.

Covalent ComicIn his 8th grade science class at Correia Middle School, Mr. Ozeni uses his web site to provide documents, data, and templates and also to publish student work.  In addition, he also uses Topic Forums using PHPBB for teacher moderated online threaded discussions.  Below are links to the different projects on the site with a summary of what you will find at each link.

8th Grade Science Fair Project:
Students used Microsoft Word for writing and making tables, Microsoft Excel for creating data tables, analyzing data, and making graphs, Microsoft PowerPoint for creating a mock up of the science fair presentation board, digital cameras, and scientific tools such as probeware.

Rubber Band Trajectory Project
Students used Microsoft Word for write up, Microsoft Excel for collecting, analyzing, and graphing data, and the Internet to conduct research and conduct simulations.

Balloon Powered Car Project
The students used the topic forums to collate research, Microsoft Excel for collecting, analyzing, and graphic data, Microsoft Word for podcast script and write up, Internet for research, iMovie and GarageBand for creating podcasts.

Topic Forums

Boat Project
Students used the Internet for research, Microsoft Word for write up, Microsoft Excel for data collection, analysis, and graphing.

Atom Discovery Comic Project
Students used the Internet for research and ComicLife software to produce the comic.

Element Cube Project
Students use the Internet for research and Microsoft Word for write up.

Astronomy Comic Project
Students use the Internet for reserach, Inspiration software for data collection and organization, ComicLife software to produce a visual and textual trip through the uinverse in a comic strip, and GarageBand to produce a video podcast.  Templates, scaffolds, and links for reasearch are also located at this site.
